Who is Gabriel John Devoe?

Gabriel’s Story

In the Hebrew language, Gabriel means God is my strength and John means God is gracious. Both are true of our Gabriel. Gabriel John Devoe was born on July 24, 1999. A miracle baby from birth, his strength in utero was just a glimpse of the independent and strong-willed child and young man he would grow to become. God’s grace protected him in the womb and allowed the power of God to be on full display. Gabriel is and always will be our miracle baby and heart string. Gabriel is not only a beloved son and brother, but also a cherished uncle, nephew, grandson, cousin, and friend. His contagious smile forever brightens up our lives and could no doubt light up a room. As soon as Gabriel walked in, everyone would just start smiling or laughing. Gabriel had a way of making others laugh without trying and, his greatest joy was knowing all his loved ones were together and happy. All who encountered Gabriel are blessed to hold the memories of his kindness, humor, love, and strong but gentle spirit.

Gabriel held our hearts in his hands even before he was born. The day of his arrival brought us so much joy and every day with our Gabriel filled our hearts with many memories we continue to cherish. Like when Gabriel would pump up his chest if another man looked at his mama, or when he would be in the back seat of the car preaching like his daddy at just 10 years old. And yes, he did “hoop and holler” like his daddy. Gabriel’s love for his family and desire for everyone to be together led his sisters to start a “Sibling Day” tradition. The moments spent together will always be cherished. Gabriel’s middle sister made sure that growing up, they both had a pair of Jordan’s alike. When Gabriel would grow out of his, he would pass them back down to his Sis. Gabriel’s oldest sister is the sister who is like a mama. He knew he could always count on her. Funny in her own right, when they were both in the room, it was double the laughter for everyone around.

Gabriel will always be with us. His legacy continues in the countless lives he has influenced and in our hearts, which he will always and forever occupy. In Gabriel, we celebrate a life beautifully blessed, beautifully lived, and deeply loved. We will carry forward the love of Gabriel through The Gabriel John Devoe Foundation and in all that we do— transforming pain into purpose, ensuring that every voice is heard, every victim is remembered, and every community is strengthened.
